In a partnership between The Northeast Greek Leadership Association and Phired Up, The Social Excellence Series provides fraternity/sorority members, advisors, and professionals an exclusive, intensive, and experiential educational opportunity to prepare themselves as the world's best connectors, relationship-builders, influencers, and group gatherers.

Social Excellence prepares individuals to build meaningful connections with others so that they can organize and make the world a better place. People who choose to incorporate Social Excellence into their lives will be better prepared to lead their organizations, collaborate with others, engage in meaningful conversations about the important issues of society, gather others together around causes that matter to them, grow the organizations/groups they care about, and make a meaningful impact on the world. Social Excellence is about making momentary choices that lead to deeper levels of human connection, and - in a world that is becoming more disconnected, more divided, and less “human” by the moment - these choices are more important than ever.

The 2024 Social Excellence Series is comprised of immersive learning opportunities from typical educational sessions to pop-up experiences, and personal challenges or “dares” that will encourage participants to go beyond their comfort zone and practice Social Excellence in real time. Participants are encouraged to do as much as possible and challenge their own socially excellent boundaries. The Series will provide a framework, understanding, and growth for all who DARE to join in and work to become better-engaged citizens for a world that needs them now more than ever.

What is Social Excellence?

Social Excellence [n]: A state of perpetual generosity, curiosity, positivity, and openness to limitless possibility. A desire to intentionally connect with others. The ability to engage in deep, meaningful conversation. Acting in a responsible and respectable manner with high expectations of others. Being authentic and living every day with integrity as the best version of oneself. Being confident and vulnerable. Being fun and compassionate. Being open, kind, and bold. The highest level of societal participation and contribution.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Express the individual choices unique to them that lead to improved levels of human connection in their lives.
  • Demonstrate heightened levels of curiosity, generosity, authenticity, and vulnerability in their interpersonal interactions.
  • Practice socially excellent choices in their (current or future) leadership and management roles.
  • Outline their social impact on their community and the world around them through a framework of Social Excellence.

What will the experience look like?

Participants will ideally participate in as many of the Social Excellent experiences as possible (participants are welcome to join the opportunities that work for them). The education team from Phired Up has collaborated with NGLA to create an intensive and experiential learning environment that is inclusive of all participants. Expect active participation, engagement with other attendees, continuing education between the main sessions via digital communication, and social challenges throughout the four-session experience.

Truth or Dare: We DARE You to Make a Courageous Choice presented by Jonah Mudse

February 22 at 8:00pm ET as part of the Welcome & Opening Program

Life is full of opportunities to go beyond your comfort zone. You have the opportunity to challenge yourself… DARE yourself to make choices that push you outside of your comfort zone. In fact, it’s not just right now you have the opportunity to dare yourself. Every moment is a choice. Every moment you can dare yourself to go beyond. You have big choices -- where you’ll live, major, career, who you’ll do life with. Daily choices -- what you say yes/no to, how you spend your time, how you interact with the world. Social Excellence is a choice…a lifestyle choice that guides and informs all your big and small choices. Together, we’ll choose to be engaged, have fun, and step outside our comfort zones to get to know people we would never have interacted with without this opportunity. So, DARE yourselves to be engaged, connect, and HAVE FUN!

To Be Social is to Be Human presented by Jonah Mudse

February 23 from 11:45am - 12:45pm ET as part of Education Block 2

There is an ART and a SCIENCE to human connection and Social Excellence. And to be social is to be human. There is an innate desire in every person to find a way to connect with those around us - whether we are extroverts and thrive on the energy of many or we are introverts and thrive on the small spaces where connection occurs between two people. Let’s work on connecting to Social Excellence as we connect with others - by being curious, showing generosity, being authentic, and showing vulnerability. When you excel at being social, you help others around you become more socially excellent as well.

Socially Excellent People Will Change the World presented by Jonah Mudse

February 23 from 5:30pm - 6:00pm ET at the beginning of Dinner on Your Own

If we want to change fraternity and sorority, if we want to change the world, we need to grow, we need to gather people together, we need to mobilize for change. And, the science of changing the world calls for special social skills. Maybe you consider yourself to be socially bold already or maybe you know your passion an innate desire to do good and encourage others to do good drives you to stretch your social comfort zone. Either way, we cannot create change without others. We cannot create change without relationships. And yes, there is a secret to establishing true, long-lasting relationships. Ones that last, and ones that matter. Let’s dive into the science of it all - and don’t worry, you don’t have to be a scientist to be socially excellent.

Do You MATTER? The Social Excellence Journey presented by Jonah Mudse

February 24 from 2:30pm - 4:00pm ET as part of the Experiential Education Block

Do you what you mean to those who matter to you? What legacy are you leaving behind that encourages your organizations, the people you matter to, to continue to do better and live for a greater, shared purpose? Social Excellence is not just about our personal journey - yes, that’s one piece of it - but it’s more than that. The journey we are on will impact the people and organization we care about. Are we prepared to make great change? Whether you know how you want to do it, or you’re still figuring it out - let’s connect, one final time, to create a plan for how YOU maximize your impact on the lives of others and the world around you.

Who Should Attend?

Students, professionals, and volunteers from fraternities and sororities are welcome. Participants will not be divided up by title, role, or whether they’re a student or professional. All participants will be engaged as learning humans who have an impact to make on the world around them.

Jonah Mudse is motivated to help people solve the problems they might not even know they can solve. In his role with Phired Up, Jonah helps fraternity and sorority members share their gift of membership. He fundamentally believes that the world needs more fraternity men and sorority women, because these individuals grow through leadership and meaningful human connection to become the best leaders, neighbors, parents, partners, and contributors to the greater good.

Expect multiple members of the Phired Up team to contribute their unique points of view and contributions to this one-of-a-kind experience, and even look for surprise guests from outside the Phired Up team.
